Men’s Health Month: A Focus on Mental Health with Dr. Hans Dorval

Social Share

In recognition of Men’s Health Month, I had the opportunity to sit down with my line brother, Dr. Hans Dorval, to discuss the critical topic of mental health. This conversation is particularly important as we aim to shed light on the often-overlooked aspect of men’s well-being—mental health.

An Inspiring Journey to Mental Health
Q1: Can you share a bit about your journey to mental health and what inspired you to speak about it publicly?

Dr. Dorval began by sharing his deeply personal journey. “After my mother passed, I had problems I didn’t even know I had. I was drinking to self-medicate; I needed help. I saw my mother take her last breath. We all have demons, and I had to address my own.” His candidness about his struggles and the steps he took to overcome them is a powerful reminder of the importance of acknowledging our mental health challenges and seeking help when needed.

Addressing Misconceptions
Q2: What do you think is the common misconception about mental health in our society?

Dr. Dorval highlighted a significant barrier to mental health in our society: stigma. “I come from a background where seeking support from a therapist is stigmatized. In the Black community, our community, people even call it hiring a ‘shrink.’ That has to change. People have to open up their eyes and think bigger.” This stigma prevents many individuals from seeking the help they need, perpetuating a cycle of silence and suffering.

Evolving Understanding of Mental Health
Q3: How has your understanding of mental health changed over time?

Dr. Dorval’s understanding of mental health has evolved significantly over the years. “Being able to talk with someone is huge. I’ve been able to develop mindfulness.” He emphasized the importance of seeking support and the positive impact it can have on one’s mental well-being. His recommendation is clear: “Nobody is perfect, and you should never feel like less of a man for getting support.”

Final Thoughts
Dr. Dorval’s journey and insights are a testament to the importance of mental health awareness and the need to break down the barriers that prevent men from seeking help. As we observe Men’s Health Month, let us take this opportunity to encourage open conversations about mental health and support those around us in their journey towards well-being.

By sharing these stories and challenging societal norms, we can create a more supportive and understanding environment for everyone. Remember, mental health is just as important as physical health, and seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness.
